Really nice face, body and clothes. I haven't seen this particular painting, but in yours the background is overpowering. It looks like you did the background close the the end, and that's a lot of it: it really projects forward because of the areas where it overlaps the book, and because of the slight border around some areas of the figure. You might benefit from toning your ground to start with--get the background color in there first, either after roughly blocking off the figure, or just covering the entire canvas.

I'm not sure to understand all you said, but this painting wasn't finished (especially the backgroung) so I think it's because of that if there's a special impression... Nevertheless I think that I would never end this painting. This style does not really interest me. It is more a working exercise, and it is rather old (on 2001 I believe)
